How To Choose Aluminum Fence Brackets or Mounts

In construction terms, a bracket or mount is a device that allows one element to get fixed to another. A fencing wall mount/bracket allows a section of fencing to be attached to another element. This is usually a wall, but you can also use these mounts with pillars, posts, or columns.

There are a few different aluminum fence brackets that a fence supply store like us offers. Read on to learn some of the differences between the types and how to choose the right one.

Different Finishings and Shapes

As you can see from our product page, our wall mounts/brackets come in different shapes and finishings. Which type you should choose depends on what you or your customer wants and needs for a fence.

The shapes of our fencing wall mounts coordinate with the shape of your fence's railing. We provide the serial code of each railing type on each wall mount shape description. Use this to pick the correct wall mount for your specific fence.

The finishings selections of each wall mount can match the finishings of your fence. It isn't entirely necessary to match the finishings of the wall mount with that of the fence. Yet, it will probably make the finished product more attractive if you do so.

Swivel vs Stationary Mount

Often, the wall on which you want to install your fence doesn't run parallel with your ideal fence direction. Rather, the place where your fence meets a wall may make an angle. This can be anywhere from 10 to 90 degrees.

In these cases, you can't attach the fence to the wall using a non-swivel wall mount. Only a swivel mount can turn and bend around the angle. This allows you to attach your fencing to the wall.

Therefore, choose a swivel mount when you need to install it at an angle. Choose a non-swivel one when your wall rubs parallel to your fence.

Swivel and stationary wall mounts have unique positioning needs. Yet, the installation for both types is essentially the same.

Supplies Needed

  • 4-foot level
  • Measuring tape
  • Chalk
  • Spray Paint
  • Aluminum Swivel or Stationary Wall Mounts
  • Section of your fence
  • Hammer drill
  • Drill bits (Type depends on materials of wall or fence)
  • Cordless drill
  • Nut driver
  • Diamond blade grinder
  • Screws (Type depends on wall or fence material)

Step #1: Take Care of the Preliminaries

When you're building a fence, there are certain steps you need to take first. These will stop you from running into any dangers or having to uninstall the fence. We have listed a few below, but you should also research for any others.

  • Check for pipes or wires before you dig for fence posts
  • Check which fences the local laws in the area allow
  • Check the property boundaries

Step #2: Plan Your Fence's Placement

Planning out your fence's future location is another important first step. You need the fence's direction to know the angle at which to turn a swivel mount. This can also help you determine the ideal length of the fence section you'll attach to the wall.

Properly mounting the fence posts first can help you with this planning. If you don't want to do this, use spray paint to mark where your fence will go.

Step #3: Place Wall Mounts on the Fence Railings

To prevent spacing mistakes, put the wall mounts on the railing portions of the fence. Secure them by creating holes in the fence and mount and screwing them together if you wish.

Step #3: Flatten the Wall Surface

Some wall surfaces, like brick or masonry, may be uneven. Your wall mounts may not sit flat enough in this case.

If you're unsatisfied, use the diamond blade the smooth the surface. Place the wall mounts against the wall as you go.

Once you're satisfied, you can continue with the next step.

Step #4: Mark Where Your Mounts Will Go

Place your fence section and mounts against the wall where you want them to go. Use the level to make sure the top of the fence aligns at a 90-degree angle with the wall. If your attachment zone is a pillar, use the measuring tape to find the center.

Use the chalk to make X marks where the screw holes of your wall mounts will sit on the wall. The center of these screw holes should line up with the center of the Xs.

Step #4: Drill the Holes

Line up your drill bit with the center of the X mark. Then drill a hole in the wall. Make sure it's as deep as the screws you'll use later.

Step #5: Attach the Wall Mounts

Remove the drill bit from the cordless drill. Replace it with the nut driver. Place a screw on the nut driver.

Place the wall mounts, and fence section or just the wall mounts against the wall. Line up the screw holes with the ones in the wall.

Use the nut driver to drive the screw through the wall mount and into the wall. This should affix the latter and former items together.

Repeat until you've attached all the wall mounts.

If you didn't attach your wall mounts to your fence, you can now slide your fence panel into the wall mounts. Make sure a swivel mount is facing the correct angle before you do this.
